Kruger National Park

Scientific Services

SANParks Conservation staff are active across all 21 of our South African National Parks (SANParks). In keeping with the SANParks mission, Conservation Services is responsible for conservation research, guided by an adaptive management framework and aimed at the maintenance of biodiversity and the preservation of wilderness qualities and cultural resources. As a result, environmental monitoring and research are conducted within each Park.

However, severe budget limitations constrain many of the operational goals of conservation management and research initiatives. This is especially the case for conservation field staff, who often lack even basic operational items.

The SANParks Conservation Support Project aims to alleviate some of these shortages by soliciting external funds to help better equip our rangers. SANParks rangers are the eyes and ears of conservation, conducting field patrols daily.

While on patrol, field rangers map the distribution of poaching activities; surface water; disease outbreaks; invasive species; cultural sites; animal and plant species to name a few, using the CyberTracker system.

The array of ranger equipment needs span from Pocket PC’s with integrated GPS to laptop computers, mountain bikes, camo-nets, multi-tools, water bottles, backpacks, spotlights, gas cylinders, camping utensils, and binoculars.
